Dr Stuart Jones from Durham University certainly gave our little grey cells a workout at this month’s meeting.  He is a geologist and sedimentologist who loves rocks.

Talking about ‘The Road to Net Zero’ he explained the causes and effects of the build up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (predominantly since the end of WW2)  before explaining ways in which it can be reduced.  The traditional electricity production need to be replaced by other ‘cleaner’ methods – solar power, geothermal energy, hydro-electric power, wind farms.

He went on to outline the variety of projects underway to make use of heated water from disused coal mines (particularly in County Durham) and the need for research into recycling of lithium batteries.

A very stimulating morning indeed!
